Day 5 (Kathleen Lockwood)

This morning marked our last breakfast at the Radisson hotel in Erfurt, and I think I speak for more than just myself in saying that it was fantastic. Getting up at around 8 AM in German time (which is 2 AM in North Carolina) was much more bearable knowing that there were fruit salads, yogurts, teapots, and baked goods waiting for me downstairs. The waitresses always greeted us with smiles and even brought us Cappuccinos and hot chocolates this morning. After breakfast, we gathered our things and checked out of our rooms. As the bus pulled away from the hotel, we kissed the sauna, the breakfasts, the Dom, Faschinge, and urban life goodbye.

After a two-hour bus ride, we moved on to Eisleben, the birth and death place of Martin Luther. A lovely and entertaining tour guide showed us the highlights of the Luther museum, located in the house of his birth. In it were various prints, paintings, models, and other memorabilia of Luther’s family and life. We then were guided to the church where he was baptized (which was being renovated) and the church where he preached his last sermon three days before his death. We were then given a little less than two hours to find lunch and explore the city with our travel groups. My group ended up eating at an Italian restaurant and walking to the top of the city’s hill. There, we found a beautiful view from the lawn of a Saint Ann’s church. There, we stood together, overlooking the city and the fields beyond. We even paused a moment to pray, thanking God for this beautiful town and the opportunity to be here.
